Retired music teacher making ‘dramatic’ recovery

A former Wausau orchestra teacher hates to miss his son direct the music for a theater production this week but has little choice while he continues to recover from a brain injury suffered in an Aug. 30 collision between his bike and a school bus.

Chuck Olsen, 64, is a retired John Muir Middle School teacher who since has traveled the country six to eight months of the year, often on a bicycle. It was while biking with his wife, Pat, in northwestern Indiana that the life-altering crash happened as Chuck rode across a roadway on the Prairie-Duneland Trail and struck the passing bus.

The impact threw Olsen from the bike, shattering his helmet.

Family members from Wausau, Florida and Kentucky traveled to a hospital in Illinois within 20 hours of the crash.

Local prep athletes share Christmas memories

The first thing I did was call Danica, and that was all we could talk about until the concert came. My No. 1 priority was to get a band T-shirt. That was my favorite shirt for the longest time. My favorite band member was Justin Timberlake and Danica's was Lance Bass. We would always argue about who was better. Danica and I even made a up a dance to one of their songs -- "Tearin' Up My Heart."I went to the concert with Danica, her mom and my mom. I remember telling my mom I wasn't going to scream or anything.I ended up screaming through the whole concert and singing every song. If *NSYNC ever got back together I would definitely go to see them in concert again.-- Hanover Central sophomore softball player Jessica Toth, as told to Steve HanlonI saw Gramma TP'ing herself underneath the mistletoe last nightMy favorite Christmas experience is from a few years back.

Jennifer Lopez And Hollywood Await The Evil Twin

MUCH excitement now that Jennifer Lopez, aka Jenny From The Block, is preparing the birthing mat for her twins.

Twins are vey much the now look among celebrity babies. Julia Roberts gave birth to twins, and Angelina Jolie is, reportedly, carrying a brace of children. You are not anyone unless you have twins. Concerned celebs should circulate Ultrasound pictures of their unborn child and see if they can get a match.

Anorak's UltraSound Database is not yet full functional, but if you send in your pictures we will do our best to find a twin. A hasty adoption may well stave off any feelings of Solo Kid Shame (SKIDS), and you should take care to pass off the 'twin' as a genetic throwback.

Nice Little Earners

In readiness for her twins, People magazine reports that Jenny has opened a "lengthy registry" with a shop called Petit Tresor (Little Earners).

Planning panel gives OK to open coffee shop on Fort Johnson Road

James Island residents Amanda and Ali Aydin have gotten unanimous approval from the Charleston Planning Commission to open a coffee shop on Fort Johnson Road next to James Island Charter High School.

The owners, who got the go-ahead from the panel last week, say they plan to open sometime this summer.

The zoning change for Fort Johnson Road still must be approved by Charleston City Council. The issue is expected to be heard at council's meeting Feb. 26.

The Aydins bought the building and surrounding 1.3 acres at 1014 Fort Johnson Road five months ago for $425,000 with a vision to open a coffee shop. The business tentatively will be named the Fort Johnson Coffee House and will be housed in the existing building on the site.

Ali Aydin said the garage on the back of the property will be torn down to make room for a parking area.

The changing cycle

India may be the second largest producer of bicycles in the world but precious little has been done to promote the cause of cycling in the country. Shveta Pathak reports that the cycle industry is today churning out beauties that could easily make a style statement but the road ahead is rough for the two-wheeled bikes. And, the status-conscious still refuse to adopt them as a mode of transport.

DO you remember the tinkle of the bell as daakiya Rajesh Khanna delivers the post in the song Daakiya daak laya? Or, the very urbane Aamir Khan making your breath stop for a while as he competes for the famous race in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander? If you do, you mustnt have forgotten the spirit lent to these moments by the good old bicycle.

India is the largest cycle manufacturer in the world after China.

Cameron accused of reviving war on single parents

· Campaigners speak out on Tory plans to cut benefits
· Conservatives win support of leading welfare adviser

Will Woodward, chief political correspondentWednesday January 9, 2008

Guardian

Child poverty campaigners last night accused David Cameron of reviving the Tories' war on single parents after the Conservative leader unveiled plans to demand community work from the long-term jobless.

Ministers also attacked the opposition plans - which include a clampdown on incapacity benefit claims as well as punitive measures for people who refuse job offers - but mainly on cost grounds, arguing that the Tories could not deliver the changes and fulfil their commitment to spending £3bn from savings on ending the married couples' tax penalty.

He did laps at 110 km/h to prove turban held tight

BRAMPTON, Ont. — A devout Sikh all his life, Baljinder Badesha never imagined that his religious devotion would compel him to race a motorcycle around an Ontario speedway to test whether turbans unravel at high speeds. The bizarre image of Mr. Badesha's experiment last year - conducted under the auspices of the Ontario Human Rights Commission - was evoked during a constitutional challenge to a law that forces motorcycle riders to wear a helmet. .
