SAN ANTONIO — AT&T said Wednesday it will make its 10,000 Wi-Fi hotspots free to nearly all its broadband Internet customers starting next week.

Only subscribers to AT&T's premium broadband services previously had free access to its hotspots, leaving out the majority of high-speed users.

Immigrant rights march proceeding peacefully with small group.

About 100 immigrant-rights advocates marched from a Phoenix furniture store to City Hall on Wednesday to protest Mayor Phil Gordon's efforts to have Phoenix police take a more aggressive approach toward arresting undocumented immigrants. The march came on the last City Council meeting of the year, and marchers used the opportunity to speak out against Gordon's decision to no longer back a 20-year-old policy that restricts officers from asking people about their immigration status during routine duties. Under a mounting public frustrated with illegal immigration, Gordon has asked a panel to come up with a new policy that gives police more authority to enforce immigration laws, usually the job of the federal government. The decision marked a reversal from his earlier support for the policy, known as Operations Order 1.4.

Mission recovery: Injured Iraq vet focuses on future

The rocket-propelled grenade that exploded about 13 inches from Spc. Kevin Spangler's face shortened his Army career. But the blast that almost killed the 21-year-old soldier, leaving him deaf in his left ear, failed to make a dent in his cheerful spirit or vibrant sense of humor. An Alaska native who settled in Shelbyville after marrying an Army buddy's sister, Spangler received a medical discharge in June.Spangler, now 23, considered staying in the Army but decided to return to civilian life because his handicap might put other soldiers in danger."I didn't want to be a liability," said Spangler, now 23. "If there was another attack, and I didn't hear something, someone might be hurt because I didn't hear."Spangler had been in Iraq just six weeks when an insurgent took aim at him from a nearby rooftop.A member of 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Spangler was serving as top gunner on a Humvee in a small town northwest of Baghdad on Feb.

Kevin Federline

Most of you probably are already aware of this, but just in case, Britney Spears visited with her children for the first time on Saturday since January 3. Kevin Federline wanted Britney to have some time with the kids. After two days of tense negotiations, lawyers for each side hashed out a deal. E! News reports:

Aside from Spears and a court-appointed monitor, there were several other key personnel on hand, including: Britney's father, Jamie Spears; a Federline security guard; and a lawyer from the Luce Forward law firm, which is handling Britney's conservatorship for Jamie Spears.
According to an insider, the 26-year-old pop star was not permitted to take the boys, ages two and one, into another room without the others watching.

Also present was a blind chimp with a bazooka.

STATEHOUSE: Rep. Jones pushes Internet safety policies for public ...

BOSTON — You can lock the doors and windows, hold their hand at the mall and buy training wheels for bicycles. But a major danger facing kids today is right above the keyboard.

"The Internet is one of the biggest risks we have for kids safety right now," said Lawrence Lt. Sean Burke, who is president of a national school safety group.

And, a North of Boston lawmaker wants to make sure the time kids spend on school computers is safer.

Rep. Bradley H. Jones Jr., R-North Reading, is pushing legislation to require every school district to have a policy for making the Internet safe for minors and make the policy known to parents and legal guardians.

"It's important that any parent be able to know what (the school system's) policy is, and even if there is no policy in particular," Jones said.

Ellis, Croshere Fuel Big Third Period as Warriors Win

Stephen Jackson returned from a two-game absence with a sprained ankle to score 17 points for the Warriors, who got back in form after an embarrassing home loss to Atlanta last Friday. Golden State never trailed in the fourth quarter - a rarity in the Warriors' high-risk, high-reward game.

Golden State took charge late in the third with an 11-0 run, including four points apiece from Croshere and Ellis, who went 14-for-22 and added six rebounds.

"If we'd just play our third quarters at the beginning of the game, it wouldn't be so tough for us,'' said Ellis, who has 13 straight 20-point games at home.

Kevin Durant scored 21 points and fellow rookie Jeff Green had a career high 21 for the Sonics, who have lost four of six. Luke Ridnour matched his career high with 15 assists, including 12 in the first half, but injury-depleted Seattle couldn't stay with the Warriors' uptempo offense in the second half.

Shooting puts Katy Trail runners, walkers on alert

Runners and walkers were on guard Monday, a day after an armed robbery and shooting at an apartment complex near the Katy Trail, but said they were not deterred from their exercise routines.

"I feel safe," Jim Smeeding said Monday as he walked, accompanied by his giant schnauzer, Zeus. "He's a fairly intimidating presence."

Reports of crime on or near the trail are worrisome, Mr. Smeeding said, but he and his wife have felt safe enough to walk from their home on Blackburn Avenue to the American Airlines Center for a Mavericks game.
