Getting to the bottom of the MTB wheel size brouhaha

What's the best wheel size for an off-road bike? It's not a new question. In the 1980s a couple of manufacturers - notably Cannondale - offered mountain bikes with 24-inch rear wheels, and in the 1990s GT briefly dabbled with an all-purpose, intermediate size called 700D. More recently, some downhillers have used 24-inch wheels to allow fatter tyres in more-or-less conventional frames. But the biggest controversy has come about as a vocal group of bike makers and riders have adopted bikes with 700C-sized rims, and two inch tyres, a combination that has become known as a "29-inch" wheel for the overall diameter of the combination.

Two-niners, as they are also known, are currently among the hot topics in the MTB world with riders of all disciplines extolling their claimed virtues over the well-established 26-inch standard.

From the SCCC Kitchen: Almond biscotti a fun breakfast treat, dunk you ...

Form into a semiflattened log and place on sheet tray with parchment paper.

Bake approximately 20 to 30 minutes until lightly browned and firm to the touch. Remove and let cool for 10 minutes.

On a cutting board with a serrated knife, cut the log into 1⁄2-inch slices on the diagonal.

Arrange evenly on the 1⁄2 sheet pan with parchment paper and bake an additional 10 minutes until firm to the touch and browned. Remove and let cool

For chocolate ganache, mix together liquid ingredients with butter and bring to slight boil in a sauce pan. Stir in chocolate chips a little at a time until melted. Strain the mixture through a strainer. To reheat, use a double boiler.

Once the biscotti have cooled, dip each piece halfway up in chocolate ganache and sprinkle with toasted sliced almonds.

Soldiers at Walter Reed Deserve Better

So private citizens are not only giving soldiers the gear they need to fight this war — everything from body armor to parts for helicopters — they are now helping mend and care for those same soldiers, because the government cannot or will not. Come on; get angry! Rant and throw things; this really is worth turning away from blondes and lawyers on TV.

On February 21, when asked at a press conference if anyone was being fired for this mess, the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army said, "No." Well, "no" means that this travesty is guaranteed to happen again and again. We cannot win wars by treating our soldiers like this, and we might deserve to lose if you — yeah, you reading this — do not care enough to do something. We are a great nation, but we are diminished by this.

Crespo saves unbeaten run ahead of Roma showdown

Hernan Crespo equalised with 14 minutes to go to salvage a draw for injury-hit Internazionale at Sampdoria yesterday and maintain their unbeaten record in Serie A this season.

Antonio Cassano had put Sampdoria ahead in the 65th minute in Genoa. With Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Julio Cruz both absent because of injury, Crespo responded by outmuscling a defender to head in a cross from Dejan Stankovic. It was only the Argentine's third goal of the season.

"It's a goal that will improve his morale," the Internazionale coach, Roberto Mancini, said. "And when he starts [scoring], he doesn't stop."

The Serie A leaders were in danger of losing two games in a row following last Tuesday's defeat by Liverpool in the Champions League, and Mancini said: "Every once in a while it's okay to drop a few points.

Dorsey's double-double leads Tigers over UCF

With every move a University of Memphis player or coach makes, from now until this white-hot spotlight of a No. 1 ranking shines on some other corner of the college basketball universe, scrutiny does not follow far behind. It is the inescapable, inconvenient reality of having a team so talented; a daily struggle to achieve the perfection their record and their national profile demands.

For the first time this season, that perfection was challenged in a way nobody around the program saw coming. Robert Dozier, always thought of as the most solid citizen in the Tigers' locker room, was suspended for breaking the team's curfew, proving again how fragile reputations can be when the stakes are this high.

Three Cape officers to be feted for heroism

The quick action of two Cape Coral police officers saved a life and the quick thinking of a third helped solve a crime against a 93-year-old woman.

All three will be honored Wednesday at the departments monthly awards ceremony.

The first two officers Brian Gumm and Matthew Squires are receiving a life-saving award after an incident that happened Jan. 2. According to reports, Gumm was on routine patrol that day when he spotted a car that had just crashed into a palm tree.

The driver was pinned inside the vehicle in such a way that his airway was blocked and he couldnt breathe, police spokeswoman Dyan Lee said. Officer Squires was able to rip away part of the drivers seat and position the man so that he could breathe better.

The man suffered life-threatening injuries, but he survived.

SEXY SWEDE: Volvo's C30 creates luxury in a compact

The Swedes' hard work, ingenuity and long winter nights have led to a smorgasbord of accomplishments: the milking machine, the propeller, dynamite, Nicklas Lidstrom and lutefisk. All hail from Sweden -- though, honestly, lutefisk can stay there.

Now, there is the Volvo C30 -- a luxurious sporty compact that can get you from Gothenburg to Stockholm faster than you can read "The Adventures of Pippi Longstocking."

The C30 is a peek at the future of compacts -- small, powerful and speeding up to pretty darn expensive compared with typical small vehicles. But this is no pickled herring.
