Buffalo's hard-working fans should be furious

There is no doubt Huet/Kolzig is a much better combo than Kolzig/Johnson, which should be McPhee's lone concern. Bruce Boudreau's relationship with Kolzig has been uneasy, and he coached Huet in the AHL. You can't fault McPhee's desire to get better. His team will scare someone if it gets to the playoffs.

But, I can't help but wonder if the Caps should have somehow told Kolzig what was coming.

- Pavel Kubina was the Maple Leafs who declined to waive his no-trade, to San Jose. Bryan McCabe, who was at least willing to consider it, never got an offer. Cliff Fletcher said there was no interest.

- Did hosting the 2008 draft cost Ottawa Nikolai Khabibulin? Possibly. At least one other deal in the past few weeks was turned down by the Senators because it meant giving up that selection, which the team wants to hold so it can make a pick in front of their fans.

Harper to draw the line on Afghanistan

The election, of course, won't be fought over Afghanistan. That is Harper's wish because he knows that the government has shown such incompetence in governing over the past few months that his hawkish stand on Afghanistan maybe the only thing that parts of the population may see as positive. However, it also carries downsides. The handling of the mission by the Harper government has been as loaded with lies as any other part of their agenda and the opposition parties could argue that Harper can't be trusted to be handed a majority and be given a blank cheque on this or any other part of their agenda. It also presents an interesting conundrum. If Harper goes to the electorate with Afghanistan and wins a minority (polls show a Liberal minority right now but let's give him the benefit of the doubt on this), he either has to change his policy on Afghanistan or the Governor-General has to ask the LPC to form the government even if they have less seats.

Online Poll

I would be very interested in hearing some of the problems that are causing our state police to have to work under conditions most people would find difficult if not impossible. There are so many rules and so many people you have to be responsible to, it just doesn't seem fair...and when they ask for a little understanding, it seems that everyone thinks being a police officer means you somehow become less than human. I am finding in my research that there is far more occupational stress than stress that is felt through critical incidents. Is that true, and what would it take to make the job easier, not only for the officers, but also for the administration, I am sincerely interested in learning more.

Coalition Conduct in the Ground War

Unlike Coalition air forces, American and British ground forces used cluster munitions extensively in populated areas. Human Rights Watch found evidence of ground-launched submunitions (known as grenades) in residential neighborhoods across the country, including in Basra, al-Hilla, Karbala', al-Najaf, and Baghdad. A military list of duds reported after the war shows that the use of these weapons was widespread along the battle route to Baghdad, including in and around other populated areas.237 While these strikes were directed at Iraqi military targets, the weapons' inaccuracy, broad footprints, and large numbers of submunitions caused hundreds of civilian casualties.

Use of Cluster Munitions

Coalition use of ground-launched cluster munitions far outstripped the use of air-dropped models.

Several bills up for passage in state House

The Chilton County Relay for Life group is getting ready to make their big walk in just two months. This year they had a goal set to raise $201,000 along with having 55 teams. So far, they are only nine teams away from having their goal, and they are working on reaching their goals for this year's total Relay for Life donation.

Area Director Morgan Choat said, "Everyone needs to be registered for their Relay for Life teams by our next captain meeting on March 5 to make sure that we will have enough T-shirts for everyone on the teams."

The different ways to register are online and by filling out the written form. Anyone with questions should visit http://events.cancer.org/rflchiltonal. This Web site can also be used to make donations to your local teams, who are all working extra hard to raise money for cancer awareness and survival.

Milwaukie MAX: $1,400,000,000?

That means improving basic services and eliminating pet projects.

And speaking of the upcoming election, I could use some help qualifying for public financing. So, if anyone is interested in making a $5 contribution, contact me at popenukisportland@gmail.com.

Peter Crouch lifts the gloom at Liverpool

Haul down those distress pennants a notch. Relief was everywhere at Anfield. A finely taken header by Peter Crouch and a spring-heeled break from Fernando Torres brought Liverpool a win to chase the gloom away, at least for the time being.

Iraq, ahoy?

It is often dangerous when a country's foreign policy calculus, especially when surrounded by military elements, is radically altered at times of domestic political turbulence that may be a perfect recipe for disaster. Ironically, what brings together the otherwise not-so-friendly institutions that are the Turkish government and the Turkish military is their confusion over Iraq: In public, both are pro-incursion; privately none may be so.

What are the consequences?

A military march into the old Mesopotamia would not look (or happily end) something like Tintin in the land of the Kurds. There are military and political reasons why an incursion may not be militarily and politically feasible. In military terms, the cost-benefit analysis is not lucid. For example, what would the criteria be for success? How many terrorists are worth how many martyrs and how much equipment, time, effort and resources lost? What would the defined goal be? How would be achieved? Would it be achieved? Can it be achieved? If the answer is a maybe, what's the point of opting for an incursion? If yes, what would be the cost of an incursion? Who would be the enemy? PKK men? PKK sympathizers in northern Iraq? The Iraqi Kurdish Entity? The U.S.
