The best way to see Hue, Vietnam is from La Residence Hotel and Spa

Restored for its 2005 grand re-opening, the La Residence Hotel and Spa offers a taste of history inside and out (the Vietnam War's Battle of Hue was fought nearby). There are modern amenities, including conference facilities, a business center with high-speed Internet and wireless, and a terrific restaurant, Le Parfum. National Geographic Traveler calls this one of the top three hotels in Vietnam.

Ottawa moves to emulate U.S. on new fuel mileage standards

That we don't speaks more for the average Canadian than the car companies or our rules.
I had 2 Pontiac Fireflies, one was actually a Susuki Forsa and the other was a Susuki Swift.
Both were 5 speed, 5 passenger, 3 cylinder, stationwagon types. Each of them got 64 MILES to the GALLON. From 1988 thru to 2000, I car pooled using them (32 miles each way) and made a killing. I totally loved them and was extremely disappointed when Pontiac stoped selling them.
Granted, they are the 'SECOND CAR' but they were my main car - the wife didn't like them and drove a much larger vehicle that I didn't like. Posted 17/01/08 at 4:32 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

The Last Word: Amy Winehouse Isn't Sexy, Kelis Is Jive Walking, and ...

What's happening everyone? Here we are as we welcome the end of another five days. From the beach house fire that killed seven college students in North Carolina to Dog the Bounty Hunter's use of the N-word in reference to his son's girlfriend during a heated argument to rumored talks of bringing Kobe Bryant to the Chicago Bulls, it was a week of highs and lows.

Congratulations go out to Mekhi Phifer and his fiancée Oni Souratha, who welcomed their first child on Tuesday (Oct. 30), and Jennifer Lopez, who is expecting her own bundle of joy, as confirmed by clothing designer Roberto Cavalli. And let's not forget the sounding boards for making sure I do what I do best.

Next up...The Last Word for the week ending Nov. 2, 2007.

1. Amy Winehouse Makes Maxim's Unsexiest Stars List

Despite her reported battles with drugs, Amy Winehouse has had a good 2007 thanks to her critically acclaimed album Back to Black.

The Insider

George Eliot signed up for membership, and Dickens used the library to research A Tale of Two Cities.

The handsome house in the corner of St James's Square, which now has 8,000 members and one million books, has for the past 160 years been the best 'place on the civilised earth', but it no longer caters for those who are 'not rich'. Carlyle's insistence that readers pay only a 'small annual sum' has seemingly been forgotten, and the annual fee is to rise by nearly 80 per cent to £375.

Will readers begrudge the cost? For those, like me, who go there a dozen times a year, paying over a pound a day for the privilege may seem a little steep; for the many others who use the library as an office, a sitting-room, or a venue for dangerous liaisons, it is cheap at the price.

There is, simply, nothing else like it.

Song Yankun, 43, teacher

I do what I can for the environment. I take my own cutlery to my work canteen rather than using disposable chopsticks, which uses lots of wood. I recycle plastic bags by using them for rubbish and try to take my own bag when shopping. I'm glad the government brought in its new policy. [China has pledged to ban flimsy plastic bags from June.] When I go shopping, I don't really think about the environment. I am more concerned with food safety.

For me, though, the two biggest environmental worries are water and air pollution. When I was a child we lived in the hutong alleyways and heated our home with coal. I had no idea that it was dirty. But now, we have different standards and more knowledge about the health impact. When I was a child we drank water straight from the tap. Now my children have bottled water only.

Banish Plastic Bags And Save The Turtles

EVERY time you use a plastic carrier bag a sea turtle dies.

That's the message on the Mail's cover page as readers are urged to "BANISH THE BAGS".

See "a British family on a weekly shop". And know: "In a distant sea a rare turtle, plastic bags lodged in its guts, is slowly dying."

Can something be done to save it? No, not The Great British Shop - that for another campaign - the turtle? Yes, says the Mail. In all there are "13 billion ways you can help."

Sadly, one of these ways does not involve pulling the plastic bag from the featured turtle's guts. Nor does it include removing the plastic bag that "chokes" another turtle, also pictured. It is too late to save the gannet, which lies on a Cornwall beach, strangled by a carrier bag.

Sound Advice: How to find an independently owned TV store

I recently spoke with the manager of my favorite CEDIA store and as we looked at his beautifully decorated showroom, divided into separate viewing areas with big comfy couches, I mentioned how much better off people would be if they went to his store rather than the big-box places. He laughed and said, "When people see all this they think it is going to cost them more to do business here than the big places, when it costs the same or less." CEDIA members usually have special financing offers available from manufacturers, and many of them are also members of Brandsource as well.

I've preached the value of independently owned retailers for years, and in writing this column it made me reflect on each major purchase. In each case I received a better deal and truly impressive service from people who own the store and make it their profession, not just an hourly job.

Officer Bike Theft Foiled By Segway Rider

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A role reversal ensued when an Orlando police officer became a crime victim, and someone else stepped in to catch the criminal.

Police on bicycles are a common site downtown. Their job is to protect the public and prevent crime.

There's also a new team of downtown ambassadors. Their job is to provide information, but on Wednesday night the role of the police and the ambassadors was reversed. .
