Blizzard of '78 memories remain strong as a gale

Snowbanks two stories high. Cars buried so deep they were left for dead. Gales along Salisbury Beach ripping cottages off their foundations and shredding pizza stands. Kids home from school indefinitely. Ninety-nine people dead.

T-shirts came next: "I survived the Blizzard of '78."

If you were living on the East Coast 30 years ago today, you have a story.

Lowell's Dan Macheras, of Macheras Oil Service, didn't sit around feeling helpless. He jumped on his snowmobile with toolbox in hand and motored through whiteout conditions to fix heaters. His brother Peter did the same with cars. The pair even ferried prescriptions to elderly people who couldn't make it to the pharmacy.

"It was cold and windy. People were very happy they got their heat back on," Dan Macheras said.

Most will never win FDA approval.

Those outcomes also can be disappointing for patients who believe that Fast Track status gives hope of a promising treatment. And the few time-saving advantages of the designation were available five years before the FDA introduced it. They are still available to drug makers without the designation.

Many companies didn't use the Fast Track tag en route to quick approvals for breakthrough drugs that treat life-threatening conditions, such as advanced kidney cancer and a rare form of stomach cancer.

Dr. John Jenkins, director of the FDA's Office of New Drugs, acknowledged that the Fast Track designation only gives companies the same access to FDA programs that was already in place when they lobbied Congress for the provision in 1997.

Super-Sarko Shakes Up the French Political Scene

PARIS—Sporting designer sunglasses and cellphone in hand, Nicolas Sarkozy cheered and waved enthusiastically to spectators as he followed the fabled Tour de France bicycle race while standing in a fast-moving, open-topped red car. The scene was vintage Sarkozy—confident, exuberant, dynamic. In a word, modern.

Stage 4 - Wednesday, July 9: Joinville - Saint-Dizier, TTT, 69 km

On the first day of summer heat in the 2003 Centenary Tour De France, Lance Armstrong and his USPS-Berry Floor squad blazed across the French countryside to a decisive win in Stage 4's team time test. It was a long sought after win for Lance & Co., not just for the four years since Armstrong has dominated the Tour De France. In fact, Lance has wanted this team win for almost a decade. Today, he and his eight teammates got their first ever team time trial victory and as an added bonus, Colombian Victor Hugo Pea, Armstrong's loyal teammate from Bogota (who lives in Piedecuesta), became the first ever rider to wear the Maillot Jaune from the bicycle mad nation of Colombia.

Tomorrow it's Pea's 29th birthday and he'll be awarded his weight in Champagne and then take the start wearing the golden tunic of Tour De France leadership.

FCC hearings: Comcast versus Vuze

Posted in:

Infrastructure Mobile/Wireless Networking News Technology policy VoIP Net Neutrality Video Conferencing

The FCC held its hearing on Comcast's Network Management practices at Harvard University yesterday. Vuze executive Gilles BianRosa whose company filed one of the two FCC complaints against Comcast reportedly told the FCC yesterday that BitTorrent does not hog bandwidth. Since most Internet experts would dispute that claim, I generated the following hard data on the bandwidth consumption of various applications that run on the Internet.

Note: Richard Bennett who was an expert panelist at yesterday's hearings informed me that BianRosa claimed that BitTorrent didn't exceed the contracted limit.

Suburban Joy

Only 55 km along the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road, the desert stops and Al-Solaimaneyah begins. A broad, commercial high street penetrates the middle of the villa area, where all the action takes place. It is alive with restaurants, shops, entertainment centers, public utilities, gardens, and a 200-m promenade platform even as the area continues to grow.

This charming upscale community is carefully designed to ensure the privacy of villa owners. The architectural style is unique, both modern yet reflective of the demands of most Egyptian families. Recreation comes in the form of golf facilities, large, outdoor jogging areas around a lagoon, and mega-chess game at the Swan Café, in addition to football, tennis, swimming and volleyball.

A large area is allocated to a language school that includes a nursery, kindergarten, primary, preparatory andsecondary schools.

Defending champion team returns to Langkawi

Stage 3 is a twilight hot dog circuit on the waterfront, while Stage 4 is a new circuit to the Classic. The course is entirely within Eastern Park, around the Botanical Gardens, and at two kilometers in length with long straights it should allow strong riders a chance to shine.

The final stage also covers roads within Eastern Park, but is much shorter and features two technical corners and a nasty climb to the finish line outside the entrance to the Botanical Gardens.

Melbourne's weather is predicted to be fine throughout. A near perfect 25 degrees for Stage 1, but steadily increasing to the high of 37 on Saturday before a cooler day for the thousands of recreational riders who are expected to join the professionals for Amy's Ride, the Amy Gillett Memorial ride, which proceeds the final stage.

Dealing Hughes for Santana a questionable move

Abreu can walk after this season and Matsui and Damon after next. It looks like we might get to see guys like Jackson or Tabata sooner rather than later.

Hughes projects to be great, while Santana is great. Maybe we could package Kennedy, Farnsworthless, Igawa, and someone like Ohlendorf for Santana, but I doubt it.

Before the majority of the media anoint Johan Saintana, let's remember that he was bested by Barry Zito in his last post-season starts against the slap-hitting A's, and that his ERA in Fenway sits above 6.50!
