Off-duty Portland cop cleared in Scappoose shooting

Columbia County District Attorney Stephen Atchison on Friday said he would not pursue charges against an off-duty Portland Police Bureau officer who shot and killed a drug-crazed, gun-wielding man outside the officer's home.

Greg Stewart, a sergeant with the Portland Police Bureau, early on Oct. 5 shot and killed Jeffrey Dean Turpin, 42, of Ocean Park, Wash. Turpin was wielding a handgun and repeatedly pounding on the front door of Stewart's home in a Scappoose subdivision.

"Taking into account the facts of this case and the applicable law, it is my opinion that no charges should be filed," Atchison wrote in a 13-page legal opinion and investigative report that outlines events leading up to the shooting.

"It was reasonable for Mr. Stewart to believe that he needed to act to protect his family and home before an intruder escalated the situation to the level of actual violence or harm, rather than likely harm, to himself or his family," the report continues.

Deere takes a Giant Leap

About 50% of Deere's sales come from agricultural equipment, with the remainder split between construction equipment and commercial and consumer equipment.

"Building to demand is the biggest focus for all of these businesses," says Nelson. "We began in construction equipment where it used to be normal to order big construction pieces six months in advance. Today we'll deliver any piece of big construction equipment in far less time. That puts a tremendous amount of importance on reducing leadtimes, particularly with our supply base. We're directing a lot of our supplier development engineers toward the activity of reducing cycle times."

Nelson's team brought on board 94 supplier development engineers, including four with Ph.D.s, as part of its roadmap at Deere. Their salaries are shared by the divisions and corporate.

Bruschi tackles past, embraces the future

We were talking about how different it was when we were walking off that field [in Indianapolis] last year. Sometimes you have to experience the other side, too."

Bruschi, a third-round pick in the 1996 NFL draft, has been with the Patriots longer than anyone except wide receiver Troy Brown, who joined the team in 1993. He has seen the highs and lows on the field and off, a mild stroke in the winter of 2005 putting his career in jeopardy.

At 34, he is clearly in the winter of his career, but that perspective allows him to appreciate being part of the first perfect NFL regular season in 35 years and talk about it in a context that seems perfect for the moment in a season now down to its final game.

"If I felt any pressure this year it was before the Giant game [the final regular-season game]," Bruschi said, "when we realized the impossible could be achieved.

Barack Obama: My America

We met women who had been missionaries in Kenya and greeted me in Swahili, and farmers who tracked the financial pages of The Wall Street Journal before setting out on their tractors. Several times a day, I pointed out to Dan the number of men we met sporting white linen slacks or silk Hawaiian shirts. In the small dining room of a Democratic party official in Du Quoin, I asked the local state's attorney about crime trends in his largely rural, almost uniformly white county, expecting him to mention joy-riding sprees or folks hunting out of season.

"The Gangster Disciples," he said, munching on a carrot. "We've got an all-white branch down here – kids without jobs, selling dope and speed."

By the end of the week, I was sorry to leave. Not simply because I had made so many new friends, but because in the faces of all the men and women I'd met I had recognised pieces of myself.
