The Two Man Gentlemen Heavy Petting

(PR) The Two Man Gentlemen Band will release their third album, 'Heavy Petting,' just in time for Valentine's Day. Comprising two finely dressed young men, Andy Bean on banjo and The Councilman on bass, this NYC duo plays high-energy tunes in a hot jazz, Tin Pan Alley, vaudevillian swing style.

'Heavy Petting' is an album about love. But this isn't your typical record of ballads and gentle lyrics. The Gentlemen expertly relate love to topics like The Depression, Prohibition, even their favorite sport, badminton. Sings Andy Bean on the toe-tapping "They Can't Prohibit Love," "That firewater in the moonshine dug a hole right through my liver/ But your lovin' makes every single one of my organs quiver." You will come across a few naughty innuendos, but never fear, The Gentlemen utter nary an indecent word.

Political background to the CPE protests

We are reposting the following series of articles on the revolt of the French working class in November-December 1995 in the hope that it will help to clarify the political background to the present upheaval in that country. The ongoing revolt by millions of youth and workers is a further response to the effort by the French ruling class to slash or eliminate entirely the social gains made in decades of struggle.

In November-December 1995, the working class revolted against efforts by the right-wing regime of Prime Minister Alain Juppé to “reform” the social security system, just as today the government of Dominique de Villepin is “reforming” France’s labor laws. In 1995 millions of workers, led by the transport workers in particular, rejected the claims made by the government and the media and recognized the maneuver for what it was—an attempt to shift the burden of the social costs on to the back of the working population.

Navy picks up state recruiting

Georgia (eight), Florida and Ohio (seven apiece) also have produced as many Navy football players as the Mids' home state.

Five consecutive years of success has increased Navy's profile within the state and an increased emphasis on local recruiting has paid dividends. Navy's current recruiting class contains three prospects from Maryland, including a pair of highly touted slot backs.

Ashby Christian of DeMatha Catholic and Jarren Brown of C.H. Flowers both project as ideal slots in Navy's triple-option system since they possess superb speed, quickness and moves.

Christian rushed for more than 3,000 yards and scored 25 touchdowns in two seasons as the starting tailback at DeMatha, the perennial private school powerhouse in Hyattsville, Md. The 5-foot-10, 210-pound Bowie resident ran for 1,564 yards and 13 touchdowns this past season while helping the Stags to another Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship.

EBay Chief Whitman, Web Pioneer, Plans to Retire

EBay's third-quarter listings of auction items for sale, a key barometer of the auction unit's health, fell 3%.

The timing of Ms. Whitman's retirement is of her own choosing, say people familiar with the situation. Not long after she joined eBay, Ms. Whitman declared that no CEO should stay more than a decade in the same job because people need new challenges and organizations need fresh perspectives. While she has backed away from that comment in recent years, Ms. Whitman now appears to be making good on that early pledge as she approaches her 10-year anniversary as eBay CEO this March.

Under Ms. Whitman, eBay has become one of the Internet's most successful businesses by pioneering a way for strangers to trade with each other online. She led the company through its September 1998 initial public offering, and eBay has since delivered more than 40 consecutive quarters of sequential revenue growth.

Movie Review DB: search results

Darned if the whole house of painted cards didn't come tumbling down on her and her family, all before her 6th birthday. And that's not the whole story. My Kid Could Paint That is a documentary that brings to the fore questions of youth exploitation, celebrity culture, the "con game" that is modern art and media's role in the whole tangled mess. Filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev followed the Olmsteads through their child's rise to fame and into the infamy that followed. The story began in Binghamton, N.Y., when a local newspaper wrote up the precocious little blond whose work was being hung by an attention-happy gallery owner. The New York Times picked up on it. All of a sudden, everybody had to have "a Marla." She was compared to Jackson Pollock. And from the very start, some folks recognized her arrival on "the scene" as the ultimate art-world irony.

Another disabled person used as bomber

BAGHDAD | A man in a wheelchair laden with explosives was pushed into an operations center in Samarra on Monday, where he blew himself up, killing the center's deputy commander.

It was the third time this month, according to Iraqi security forces, that people with disabilities have been used to carry explosives that killed themselves and others.

Interior Minister Jawad Bolani said the bomber might have unwittingly carried the bomb. He described the bomber as a regular visitor to the police station who was known to commanders there.

Police said the man said he needed to speak with the major general in charge of police and military operations in Samarra. He agreed to speak to his deputy, Brig. Gen. Abdul-Jabbar Rabi, because the commander was in a meeting.

Mumbai, February 11

A business news channel, which has been highlighting the grey market premium on Reliance Power in the run-up to the close of the IPO, was on the defensive today.

It carried a poll which said none of the brokers it polled expected the share to list below its issue price. According to the channel, 53 per cent of the brokers it spoke to, expected Reliance Power to list at Rs 550-600.

"Retail investors who were allotted 16 or 17 shares at the rate of Rs 430 each stand to lose little in the IPO," says Amit Sanghvi, a Mumbai-based broker. His advice: hold on to the shares till the market sentiment improves.

Reliance Power is expected to earn its first revenues from 2009 and earn its first profits only from the following year from the several Ultra-Mega Power Projects it is setting up across the country.
