| A Personal Rememberance by John Allen, League Board Member
In 1972, I was halfway home with a flat tire and walked into a bike shop that was just closing. Sheldon stayed late to fix it. That's how I first met him. There were 46 bicycles in or around his house "with a few shared wheels", by his recent count, mostly in his basement. He didn't buy bicycles off the shelf -- as a challenge to his mechanical ingenuity, and a way to spend less money and spend more time doing what he liked to do, he cobbled up customized bicycles from parts he acquired mostly through special deals, barter or secondhand, to suit himself or someone in his family. He often came up with a something unique, clever and useful. You may read about his bicycles on his Web site. He had an eye for style, but also, one or two rusty clunkers hung out by the back door getting rustier, for the quick ride to the convenience store, and several old hulks of bikes lived under the front porch.
Russian bombers to test-fire missiles in Bay of Biscay
Putin is a smart guy and knows his real lever in Europe is energy, but he also needs to make noise with his military once in a while. If push really came to shove, his military wouldn't last an hour against NATO and he knows it. The only credible weapon he still has is the nuclear tipped ballistic missile, and that isn't a credible threat from anyone but a nutcase (of which Putin clearly is not). These maneuvers are for domestic consumption, because I don't think anyone in the US/NATO military is honestly scared of 1950's prop bombers. For the outside world, this is more like an old fat guy strutting around in a Speedo..... .
Businesses Unharmed in California Wilfires
RAMONA, CAWhile most manufacturers and shop owners escaped unscathed from the recent wildfires that swept through Southern California, most reported some form of business disruption. Ellsworth was forced to evacuate its headquarters in Ramona, setting up a temporary administrative center in Oceanside. The companys inventory and manufacturing are still intact. Ellsworth has continued filling standing orders, and orders taken from Interbike. The bad news is that the organic avocado grove that the company worked to restore on their administrative premises was burned in the fire, said George Patten, who handles public relations for Ellsworth. The grove houses the administrative, design and warehouse buildings at the Ellsworth headquarters. Oakley, located in Orange Countys Foothill Ranch, got an up close and personal look at the Santiago fire.
Inland factories slow production, index says
The slowdown washing over Inland Southern California's economy may be filtering down to the manufacturing sector, a report released Friday showed. The Purchasing Managers Index, which measures factory activity in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, declined to 46.6 in January from 50.9 in December, the Institute of Applied Research and Policy Analysis at Cal State San Bernardino reported. A reading below 50 suggests that the factory sector is contracting, although economists look for three consecutive months before considering it a trend. The Inland PMI has showed manufacturing growth for most of the past four years. .
Police departments in Pierce County battle gangs with team approach
Last year, the Tacoma Police Department gang unit arrested 1,193 people, collected 65 guns, confiscated $78,560 in cash and took hundreds of grams and pills of illicit drugs off the street. Yet, gangs remain a force in the city and the surrounding area. "It's kind of building up everywhere," Fife Police Chief Brad Blackburn said recently. Investigators say gang-motivated violence left three people wounded outside McCabe's American Music Cafe in October, two men dead and one wounded in Lakewood in October and an innocent bystander dead at an East Side bar in August. In the past 90 days, Fife police handled an arson, arrested a teen who pointed a gun at a classmate and investigated an armed robbery at a hotel during which an employee was pistol-whipped and shot at.

A shuttle will be available for those unable to make the climb up the road to the hut.The Land Trust engaged Scholz & Barclay Architecture of Camden to design the restoration, based on a previous historic evaluation of Beech Nut conducted by the preservation architecture firm Barba & Wheelock. The general contract for construction was awarded to Landmark Construction of Warren, whose workmen and subcontractors have worked with great care to bring Beech Nut back to its original glory.During the process all of the wood structure in the floor and roof was removed due to rot, and the building was reduced to its stone walls.
Viewers' Comments On Randy Salerno - Part 3
To those who were there, that moment was less about the movie story and more about what kind of person Randy was friendly, full of life, and captivating. Clearly, what viewers saw through their television sets was true and genuine. God Bless. -Michael F., Huntley My sincere and heartfelt condolences to all of you at CBS, and to the family of Randy Salerno. Although I wasn't able to watch the morning news as often since my change to the second shift, I remember fondly, many a morning of laughter and joy because of this amazing individual. Randy could change my sober mood into a giggle fit in no time. On many mornings, my son would call me to make sure I was watching, and we'd laugh together while Randy had his co-workers in stitches on the air. I'm sitting here watching the many tributes to Randy Salerno...which are not limited to Channel 2...and in the midst of my tears, I am again finding myself laughing at the wonderful memories being shared.
