OC Council in huff over grant center

The panel winds up giving the project less money for a shorter time than requested.

Oil City Council got its collective dander up about a proposed grant resource center pegged for the Franklin Library at a work session Monday and voted to provide less money for a shorter time than what the center organizers had envisioned.

"My concern was that Oil City was not brought in at the very beginning and we were informed pretty much after everything was decided," sniffed Mayor Sonja Hawkins.

Her comments related to a request for $2,000 each year for five years to help fund the newly established Venango County Grant Resource Center.

The group, which will be headquartered at the Franklin Library, aims to assist non-profit agencies and municipalities in applying for federal, state and charitable trust monies.

SAG awards cast in a lead role

TV Guide's coverage starts at 4 p.m., with Rinna and Fatone joining at 6.

Rinna and Fatone were hired by TV Guide last April to be the faces of the network for red carpet events at major awards shows. The first for the duo was last September's Primetime Emmy Awards.

Rinna said she was sad the Globes were canceled, in part, because she wanted to feel the momentum of going from the Globes into the Oscars on the red carpet.

"I haven't seen Joey since the Emmys," she said. "That's what's so kind of strange about it. It's been four months. I'm looking forward to doing a few of these."

She'll be in New York next week for a Thursday appearance on "Live With Regis & Kelly," then she'll head back to Los Angeles for red carpet rehearsals.

"We have stand-ins come and pretend to be Leonardo DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie.

Tyler Beard: Western designer, author, collector who 'swam upstream'

Many know Tyler Beard as an internationally recognized authority on cowboy boots and Western heritage. After all, he wrote several books on the subjects and sold Western wear to customers around the world – most notably designer Ralph Lauren.

Still others know of the less-documented portions of his life that began after he graduated from Skyline High School in 1972.

First there was the English-antiques phase. Then came the Edward Scissorhands-phase as an avant-garde New England hairstylist and real-estate investor.

Most recently, he was considering writing and illustrating a children's book.

Mr. Beard, 53, died Dec. 20 in his sleep at his Dallas home. His health had been compromised by treatment for head-and-neck cancer a dozen years ago. He also had never seemed to fully recover from the 2005 death of his wife, Teresa Beard, said his sister, Debra Conkling of Granbury.

Gators now atop Rivals.com’s rankings

You do realize they've sent more players in the first round of the NFL draft than UGA.

Have you looked at the Rivals rankings since 2000? They recruited better than UGA, just because they record doesn't show it, doesn't mean they haven't been getting good players.

These rankings have some meaning, but look at VT, kansas and other schools that you don't see recruit "well"

Discover Portsmouth's best kept secret

The four men were in smokers' exile on the front stoop at the bar, when the woman parked her car, got out and approached them, alone. She stopped at the foot of the stairs and looked up the four steps to the men. The men looked back. The woman spoke first. All four men began laughing. The woman walked up the stairs, spoke again and joined the laughter. The five then spoke for several minutes, laughing often, soaking up the weak winter sun. As the men stubbed out their cigarettes, the woman bade them farewell. She returned to her car. The men stayed outside to wave goodbye as she drove away. This took place at the Beach House, 506 Park Ave., in downtown Island Park. If you are there in January, you must be a local. Of course, that is almost as true in July, too. Island Park is one of this area's best kept secrets.

Where And Why Humans Made Skates Out Of Animal Bones

As happened later for skis and bicycles, I am convinced that we first made ice skates in order to limit the energy required for our daily journeys".

Formenti and Minetti did their experiments on an ice rink by the Alps, where they measured the energy consumption of people skating on bones. Through mathematical models and computer simulations of 240 ten-kilometre journeys, their research study shows that in winter the use of bone skates would have limited the energy requirements of Finnish people by 10%. On the other hand, the advantage given by the use of skates in other North European countries would be only about 1%.

Subsequent studies performed by Formenti and Minetti have shown how fast and how far people could skate in past epochs, from 3000BC to date.

As violence eases, Sarkozy vows justice for wounded police

I notice in this discussion that accusations of racism are thrown about a little too easily. It has the effect of attempting to shut down conversation, and avoiding discussion of the central problems: Moslem immigrants refusing to assimilate; Moslem immigrants actively loathing their non-Moslem hosts and countrymen; Moslem immigrants seeking the destruction of Western political and social systems and replacing them with Islamic ones.

The rioting and otherwise violent "youths" are very clear about their views.

The citizenry of Western Europe (certainly, for example, based on comments in this discussion) have been let down by politicians and unaccountable EU bureaucrats.

Considering the far below replacement level birthrate of Western Europe and the willful blindness of her elites, I fear that things are going to get much, much worse.
