Legislative action week of Jan. 27-Feb. 2

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION: The House approved a bill clamping down on illegal immigration. It would require businesses to check their employees' status through a federal verification program or hire people with a valid driver's license. It would prohibit illegal immigrants from attending S.C. public colleges and would create a felony for hiding or transporting illegal workers. The Senate now will take up the bill.

TEACHERS-SEX ABUSE: Legislation to make sex between teachers and students a crime even if the teen is legally old enough to consent (16 or older) was approved Thursday in the House. Any high school employee or volunteer who has sex with a student can be charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, according to the bill.

HEALTH CARE BUSINESS: Small businesses and their employees received a boost last week with the House approving a bill that is aimed at lowering health care costs.

An off-the-wall plan to fund sneakers store

So he kicked around some ideas with friends and decided to open a sneaker store at some yet-to-be-chosen location in Lexington.

That's right, sneakers -- canvas tops, rubberish soles, long strings. Sneakers. Martin has "a passion" for the Converse brand, as the Herald-Leader's Mark Story reported in April. But he'll have all sorts of sneakers in his store.

"Converse is my favorite sneakers," Martin says, "but I really enjoy all sneakers."

All he needs is the loot, the bucks, the clams to make it happen.

So he came up with the Name My Walls plan. The name of anyone who contributes $2 will be put on a wall at the store for the world to see forever.

"I haven't decided if I will let them come in and sign it or if it will be painted on," Martin says.

Teen plans anti-National Front march

He suffered extensive injuries to his head and face.

The news of the march comes just days after the National Front backed down over plans to organise a march through the town itself. The group, which met last Sunday in Chippenham, have decided to set up a branch in the town after more than 30 supporters turned out.

Executive member Steve Reynold, said: "We are only here because so many people wanted us to come and set up a branch here."

Simon will be setting up his forum on the Myspace social networking Internet site in the next few weeks.

Economists say data released Wednesday showing an unexpected fall in construction during the final three months of 2007 puts some downside risk to their forecasts for next week's gross domestic product (GDP) for the December quarter.

Business investment data released Thursday will also show how businesses are handling the RBA's rising interest rate regime and the US economic downturn.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics' December quarter construction work done report shows a seasonally adjusted fall of 1.0 per cent, compared with the previous quarter, to $28,854 billion.

Economists had expected a two per cent increase.

"While there isn't a one-to-one link between work done and components in the national accounts, the soft result points to downside risk to next week's Q4 GDP," Westpac senior economist Matthew Hassan said.

UWGB faculty pianist presents recital Sunday

The title of Chopin's "Ballade" refers to a literary story form and the music suggests a person's journey through continual transformation of recurring themes. The Schubert sonata, written near the end of his life when he was ill, also seems to be a work about transformation and coming to terms with the events and meaning of his life.

Severtson joined the UWGB faculty in August. He previously was on the faculty at Luther College in Iowa and taught at Macalaster College in St. Paul.

He has appeared in recitals and in concert series in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio and Washington. Severtson's doctor of musical arts degree in piano performance is from the University of Minnesota, and he has a master of music from the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.
