| Anger at Pembrokeshire's "poor" train service
A 22-year-old Kilgetty man has demanded an apology from Arriva Trains Wales for poor train services which have frequently left him unable to get to work. Ben Large depends on public transport to get to Pembroke School where he works as a cover supervisor. Since October he has missed a morning's work on five separate occasions due to the train not turning up. Ben has never needed to own a car and has only found the train system to be problematic after returning to Pembrokeshire. He said: "I have personally incurred a loss of earnings because of failures in the system where the promised alternative transport is either ridiculously late or non-existent. "What's laughable about it is that they've now raised their fares." He added: "It's disgusting coming from a public service, especially when the Government is trying to persuade everyone to go green'.
Bigger Children's Hospital means more time in traffic
On the east side of University Village, there's a five-way intersection where each car typically is delayed 79 seconds during the afternoon rush. Growth in the area will push that wait to more than two minutes by 2030, according to a new city study -- and a proposed expansion of Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center would add nearly another minute on top of that. But unlike several other nearby intersections affected by the expansion, there's no way to ease traffic here, the study says. "Currently, there are no feasible improvements to this intersection." All told, the expansion would increase vehicle trips to the hospital 91 percent -- from 9,200 a day now to 17,600 in 2030 -- although remote parking and alternative transportation could cut the impact significantly, according to the study, which was released Jan.

In nod to Spain, Alaska's largest city holds first reindeer run
One had taped a paper bulls-eye to her back. Others masqueraded as carrots and lichen, both favorite foods of reindeer. At the signal to go, the reindeer stampeded into the crowd. Passing tourist shops, the downtown federal building and a stand selling reindeer hotdogs, the animals were well out in front by the halfway point."We thought, 'Ok, they're just going to mosey along,' but they took off running," said Amanda Pelkola, who dressed as a carrot with a friend. "We got smoked by the reindeer." .
Israel looks to cut Gaza links
Such an arrangement would in effect end the international sanctions against the Islamic militants.Taher Nunu, a Hamas government spokesman, suggested yesterday that Hamas would seek a future role on the Gaza-Egypt border. "An open border like this has no logic," he said. "We are studying the mechanism of having an official crossing point."However, it's not clear whether Egypt will acquiesce. The Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak, has been under intense public pressure at home to alleviate the suffering of Gazans under blockade. However, Egypt would likely be reluctant to have an open border with a territory ruled by Islamic militants.Mr Vilnai's proposal goes against a cardinal principle that has underpinned past Palestinian-Israeli negotiations, namely that the West Bank and Gaza be treated as one territorial unit.
Passing with high grades
The announcement was made last night at Spice restaurant on North Street, where several key players in the laptop initiative gathered for the good news. Steering committee co-chairman Michael Supranowicz said the BWLI recently surpassed $1 million in private contributions, a mark that was crucial in making the three-year initiative solvent. "This shows that what we have going here is a community effort," Supranowicz said. Launched in January 2006, the initiative has supplied 2,305 Apple iBooks to teachers and students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades at Silvio O. Conte Middle School in North Adams and at the Reid, Herberg and St. Mark's middle schools in Pittsfield. The $5.3 million program is being used as a pilot program by the state, with funding generated from both state and private capital.
